The Wonderlic test

Fifty questions, twelve minutes, and almost nobody finishes. The Wonderlic is a speeded cognitive ability test used in hiring — and, famously, by the NFL.

The format

Fifty questions, twelve minutes, no calculator. Questions cover verbal reasoning, numerical reasoning, logic, basic mathematics and spatial relations, arranged in roughly increasing difficulty.

The score is simply the number correct. The average is around 20 out of 50, and completing all fifty is rare enough that the test is better understood as a speed measure with a difficulty gradient than as a difficulty measure with a time limit.

That design is deliberate. Where an untimed reasoning test asks how well you reason, a speeded test asks how much correct work you produce per minute, and those are different questions with different predictive profiles.

What the score means

Wonderlic scores map approximately onto the IQ scale, though the conversion is rough and the publisher has been careful over the years about how directly the comparison is drawn.

Treat the middle column as indicative rather than exact. The conversion depends on which normative data is used and on the fact that a twelve-minute speeded test and a two-hour clinical battery are not measuring quite the same thing.

Who uses it

Employers use it as a fast cognitive screen, particularly in roles where training speed matters. It is cheap, takes twelve minutes, scores mechanically and correlates with training outcomes — which is most of what an employer wants from a screening instrument.

The NFL is the reason most people have heard of it. Prospects have been tested at the scouting combine for decades, and individual scores have leaked regularly enough to generate a small industry of commentary. Whether the scores predict anything useful about football performance has been examined several times, and the findings have generally been unimpressive — which has not much affected the tradition.

Some educational institutions use it for placement, and it appears in research as a quick ability proxy.

How to prepare

This is the rare cognitive test where preparation genuinely helps, because the binding constraint is time rather than difficulty.

1. Know the clock. Twelve minutes for fifty questions is about fourteen seconds each. Internalising that changes how you behave on question four.
2. Skip aggressively. Every question is worth one point. Spending ninety seconds on a hard item costs you six easy ones.
3. Practise the arithmetic. A meaningful share of items are calculations that are trivial with practice and slow without it.
4. Learn the recurring item types. Word analogies, series completion, simple logic and proverb matching recur in predictable forms.
5. Do timed practice, not untimed. Untimed practice teaches you the content and not the pacing, and the pacing is the test.

Gains from this kind of preparation are real and can be substantial, which tells you something about what a speeded screening test measures.
